Kate Poppenhagen, Advisor

Kate Poppenhagen (she/her) is a passionate advocate and lifelong learner, currently pursuing a PhD focused on intergenerational LGBTQ+ arts-based programming. With over 15 years of experience working in long-term care in roles (such as direct care provider and as a long-term care ombudsman) Kate has seen firsthand the importance of not only providing high-quality care, but also addressing the systemic inequities that impact older adults and other vulnerable communities.

Kate’s work is rooted in social justice, person-centered care, and amplifying the voices of marginalized groups—including LGBTQ+ elders and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her research bridges practical experience with academic inquiry to better understand and influence the systems that shape aging, community, and connection.

As a scholar and speaker, Kate engages deeply with themes such as intergenerational art-making, queer aging, and inclusive care practices. She has been an invited guest lecturer on the intersection of social justice and individuals living with a label of intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), and has advocated for nursing home residents at a side event for the United Nations High-Level Political Forum. She is honored to serve as an Advisor to Gray Panthers NYC and to collaborate with others who are committed to building a more just, inclusive, and age-friendly world.
