Girl Scouts and Gray Panthers NYC Unite to Launch “Age and Youth in Action” Patch, Bridging Generations Through Community and Activism

In a powerful collaboration designed to bridge the generational divide, we are proud to announce our partnership with  the Girl Scouts of Greater New York to introduce the new “Age and Youth in Action” patch. This unique initiative, created by Gray Panthers NYC intern Isabel Postelnek, offers Girl Scouts an opportunity to connect meaningfully with older adults while working toward a common goal: ending ageism and building a more inclusive, compassionate society.

Through this innovative program, Girl Scouts of all ages can earn the “Age and Youth in Action” patch by engaging in a variety of activities. These include workshops on the rich history of Gray Panthers advocacy, interactive community service projects, and collaborative events that bring young people and older adults together. At its heart, the patch program promotes empathy, mutual respect, and active citizenship, while helping participants see aging as an opportunity for learning and growth, rather than a barrier.

Fostering Empathy and Active Citizenship

“Connecting generations in meaningful ways is central to this new program,” said Karen Lundgard, Interim CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York. “Through the ‘Age and Youth in Action’ patch, Girl Scouts across the five boroughs will have a chance to build bonds with older adults, foster deeper community ties, and develop as compassionate, socially conscious leaders.”

Echoing this sentiment, Michelle Arnot, President of Gray Panthers NYC, highlighted how the partnership aligns with their mission. “Gray Panthers NYC is deeply committed to combating ageism through intergenerational collaboration,” she explained. “The ‘Age and Youth in Action’ patch creates opportunities for young people to recognize aging not as a limitation, but as a shared journey filled with opportunities for advocacy and lifelong learning.”

Activities and Engagement

To earn the patch, Girl Scouts will take part in experiences that build empathy and understanding while actively contributing to their local communities. From exploring the legacy of Gray Panthers founder Maggie Kuhn, who led with a fierce dedication to justice and equality, to connecting with older adults in meaningful and mutually beneficial ways, the program offers a hands-on approach to making a difference.

Building a Shared Future

Together, Gray Panthers NYC and the Girl Scouts of Greater New York are creating a future where the energy of youth and the wisdom of age unite to address today’s challenges and opportunities. By bringing generations together, the partnership exemplifies the value of shared knowledge, diverse perspectives, and lasting connections that transcend age.

We’re excited to hear your thoughts on this new initiative and welcome any questions or reflections on how intergenerational collaboration can inspire change in your community.

With 1,600 troops and 20,000 members across NYC, this patch has the potential to create lasting change—but we need your help to make it happen.

Your donation to the Age and Youth in Action Patch Fund will go directly toward defraying the $1,000 production cost for this impactful project.

Every contribution gets us closer to empowering scouts and advancing the fight against ageism.
