Antidote to Ageism: Awareness and Appreciation - Happy Grandparents Day 2023!

A celebration of the timeless wisdom, boundless love, and cherished memories that grandparents bring into our lives—Grandparents Day is a special occasion that allows us to honor and appreciate the invaluable role that grandparents play in shaping our families and communities. It's a day dedicated to breaking down age barriers, fostering intergenerational connections, and recognizing the wealth of knowledge and experiences that our beloved grandparents offer.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the antidote to ageism—a day filled with awareness and appreciation for the generations that came before us. We’ve gathered a number of stories from the GPNYC family celebrating our grandparents and the impact they’ve had on us.

Grandparents and grandchildren have a special connection that should be recognized and celebrated. My grandparents have always inspired me to be a compassionate person and cherish the relationships I build. Therefore, this summer while interning with Gray Panthers NYC, I was reminded of my own grandparents and the importance of fostering intergenerational community. So, this National Grandparents’ Day I want to celebrate grandparents and recognize the need for inter-age collaboration and communication.

Happy Grandparents Day!

My grandparents and other older relatives played a significant role in my upbringing, providing countless memorable adventures. They played a pivotal role in shaping my character and influencing how I engage with the world. Their unwavering love and support instilled in me the values of kindness and putting others first. Their exemplary compassion served as a guiding light.

I often miss them, my thoughts frequently drifting to them, and I hold onto the hope that they would be proud of all their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Despite not having had the opportunity to meet my mother's father, his influence on me is palpable through the cherished stories shared by other family members who knew and loved him.

While I don't have children of my own, witnessing my parents become grandparents to my two wonderful nephews has been a delight.
