On May 31 the South Dade chapter of the GP honored Kristen Gonzalez with the Al Afterman Scholarship award. Ms Gonzalez, who is pursuing her Masters Degree in Education, was chosen as Rookie Teacher of the Year from her school. This is a special distinction for first year teachers in the Miami School System acknowledging outstanding accomplishments by first year teachers. Along with a cash donation Kristen received a Crystal Award that she can display on her desk.
The Scholarship Award was established in honor of Al Afterman who was the founder of the Gray Panthers of South Dade. Mr. Afterman was a close friend of Maggie Kuhn and the chapter was fortunate to have Maggie visit numerous times before her death.
‘We have given out Scholarship awards, each year, for approximately the past 20 years,’ said Ramona Frischman, longtime South Dade GP. ‘The funds for the scholarships are donated by our membership.’
